Hi I know veeerry little about linux, in fact I've only ever used ubuntu cos its all very simple and the package manager is handy. However the simplicity is a double edged sword cos i much prefer settings to be exposed and in-depth in normal life (AKA Windows - where tweaking actually makes sense). But at least with the simpleness i can actually use it without going crazy with the case-oversensitiveness and conf files spilling out all over the place.

Rant over i'm completely useless at installing/updating drivers so I was wondering which distribution would has the best history or would have best driver support for ATI/AMD cards.

Thanks for your time!....and sorry for the random rant.

The Free ATI driver has made some real headway, so as usual I'd say it's a case of just picking a distro to suit your overall needs. If you have moderate experience and aren't afraid of the command line, Arch will always be great.

Debian or arch.

Arch is a massive jump from ubuntu, I did it and am better for it. Ubuntu is good if you just want a working desktop right from the off. Arch allows you to build a desktop to your needs.

I have just gotten into debian net installs :) Exor converted me from arch :p

Slightly OT but I have found big issues with the Ubuntu 9.04/Mint 7 x64 release (some obscure memory management bug). How is the Arch/Debian x64 stability?
Debian net installs - huh?

The open source ATI drivers do at least do Compiz acceleration and video playback acceleration. Just as well as the ATI propretiary driver won't work with cards before the 2xxx series in Ubuntu 9.04 (due to the newer X-server it uses). However I don't think the OpenGL 3D acceleration is fully working yet - is that right? (Although it can display an fglrx gears window...)

Well I sold my ati card over xmas basically because the drivers were pants, but I was commenting on the stability/ease of use of the OS.

Yes I have been fiddling with debian net installs. Basically u download lenny but only the base 150mb cd, then you install what apps, X environment etc etc etc you want. Works a treat.
