My website has slowly been growing but to get more visitors i want to change its name

Currently its Geon106

but i'm thinking of making it either

techguygeon or techguyjon

as you can tell its a tech blog and has some of my projects.. im not sure which sounds best

When thinking of a domain name pick one which would be the easiest to tell someone else. If you went for the geon one, you'd have to tell them the domain, then spell out g-e-o-n each time.

So with that in mind I'd go for techguyjon, but also register techguyjohn and 301 that on.

Thats a good point and is a problem i have with the current name.

Thank you, i'll probs go for techguyjon.co.uk and move it from Geon106

Hopefully that'll help SEO and as you say, be easier to tell people by word of mouth.. plus it rolls off the tongue

What kinda keywords do you want to be found out? If you want people to find you under tech blog (probably stupidly competitive and unachievable) then go for techblogjon or techblogjohn.co.uk rather than techguy - keyword rich domains work!

Wish my name was Bob, i could have bobstechblog

Your current site has some nice PR so don't desert and close it. Run the new one alongside it for now until you can build its popularity up. I would also install this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/platinum-seo-pack/ and where it asks for title go for something like "Geon106 - For Technical Reviews And News"... Then a nice description in the description field and you will be amazed at the extra traffic it will gain you within the next month

Thanks :) In what way does it have good PR though?

I may do that, maybe have the other domain and 302 redirect it to Geon106 for now. I do like the name Geon106, but i'd like a name without numbers to be better for traffic and spreading the name.

I'll try that plugin. Thank you :)

PR = Page Rank how google determines how popular and decent your site is. Nobody knows the calculation behind it but the better the page rank the higher your site appears for particular searches. Google has a PR10 maximum

Starting at 0 and working your way up PR4 is a very useful and good place to be, not many individuals get past PR5.

Google released (some time ago now) a toolbar for browsers, IE has it as an option on the Google Toolbar and it is an addon for Firefox, I have it installed and your PR is a 2.

While the google PR tool is not a definitive measure it is useful..

I have some sites on page one of google for certain search terms and they are PR2 while I have some sites PR4 and they get less traffic due to it being a far more competitive search phrase.

I actually think Geon106 sounds better than them both. The "techguy" ones sound quite generic really, Geon106 sounds interesting even if it is somewhat meaningless, I know it'd interest me in to checking what it's about if I hadn't visited it before.

I'll have a think about it. I'd go for just Geon but it'd cause confusion over the PSN game of the same name(i got there first may i add :P )

The domain name isn't something i'm really rushing for, as it'd not make the biggest difference in search ranking. I want to get some more good content first and tidy up my site a bit.

Your all really helpful though :) Its good to have unbiased outsider opinions on names etc. I'd post my website address (not that its hard to guess) but I don't want to be banned
