Best driving game?

Well car racing really.Grand Prix or sports cars.I have access to a PS2 and Wii,and computer,so not so bothered about the platform.

Depends what you want.

iRacing is meant to be the pinnacle of realism with it's laser scanned tracks and so on.
Burnout Paradise is a good laugh for messing around smashing the crap out of everything.
GRID is a good fun arcadey track racer.
NFS Shift is a popular stab at halfway between sim and arcade.
DiRT wasn't a bad rally game and 2 is out soon.

Really does depend what you are after.

iRacing sounds like the sort of thing I am after! Thanks for that, will check it out. What about the platform? Better on PS2,Wii or computer?

Well it's only on PC because it's about the most hardcore and realistic racing simulation ever created.

You'll need a wheel to play it too, a decent one (think G25).

I'm not sure it definitely will be the game for you. It's PC only, online only, subscription based + content charges and you will need to buy a wheel. As it's the most realistic commercial simulation you can get your hands on it's also really quite unforgiving, you will have to put a lot of effort (and cash) into it to keep up with the rest of the grid. If you're just after a bit of fun then something like Grid is for you.

If you do want to go down the sim route (good for you), then there is a 30 day free trial for iRacing. Other good sims include rFactor (has bajillions of mods of high quality, check out SimRaceWay), GTR2 (good for endurance races), Race07 + expansions (similar to GTR2, sans night racing, pit stops etc but has a quality Touring Car series), Live For Speed (fictional cars + tracks but superb for getting into an online race quickly without much hassle), Richard Burns Rally (super fun rally sim) + many more that I don't really play and have forgotten.

I think from the fact you're even considering whether to play on a console or a PC, a proper sim is probably not what you want.

Try GRID, that'll probably suit you well.

Well thinking about a console because my computer is not exactly up to date! I assumed a console would be more powerful than my current set up.

Some of those subscription based games look awesome, any of you guys use them?

simraceway looks very good...

of Rfactor, Simraceway and iRacing any recommendations? Rallying would be good - is that in simraceway?

Iracing is PC only, its a very serious sim and will take a little geting into if you've never tried a sim before. Its multiplayer online only and to move through the licensing system you have to abide by strict competition rules.

If your spec's still the same as your Sig, your going to struggle, it will run but you'll get pretty low fps, it really needs a dual core cpu to at least be playable, you'll probably have to drop the graphics detail right down as well.

Its also recommended to use a force feedback wheel as it gives a lot of physical feedback as to what the cars doing, although a joystick / joypad with analogue sticks will work.

Personally i love it and would recommend giving it a go if your serious about getting into driving sims, but its not to everyones tastes.

I think your X1950 trumps your PS2 mate ;) You could try Gran Turismo on your PS2 if you dont mind blurry last gen resolutions though.

SimRaceWay is the website to replace rfactor central, it currently uses rFactor and GTR2. I would recommend getting either of those games and trying out SimRaceWay. It has thousands of cars and tracks to download (only available for rFactor at this time), has lots of competitive and fun severs that download and install all the content you want with one click. It has live feeds of some of the servers, people to chat with and advanced stuff coming soon like telemetry. They are currently running a Subaru rally server (previously a sort of Dakar rally server, they mix things up from time to time).

Yes its definately worth a go, it has its advantages and disadvantages compared to the other sims, not least its subscription based and hence more expensive due to laser scanned tracks / cars, but the physics are second to none, the racing is superb and clean thanks to strong enforced competition rules, plus continous development and a major release every 13 weeks ( each season lasts 12 weeks ).

Cars vary depending in license level, at Rookie its 12, then for each license level it increases, something like Class D 16, Calls C 20, Class B 30, Class A / Pro 30, i think it can goto around 40 for "hosted" i.e. privately started servers, but not all tracks have 40 pit boxes though. You can now move through the license levels each week if your Safety Rating is high enough, i.e. you lose rating for incidents with other cars, crashes, spins etc.

You cant see the Iracing forums without being a member, but there is a forum at RSC with a lot of info.

You might still be able to get the free months trial via Radical Cars
