What are these Castlevania games about?

You never heard of Castlevania even with the 20+ years of gaming history it has?!?!?
Basically the series is one of the best ongoing series of a great 2D side scrolling platform game, with exception of some of the poor 3D game.
I've heard of them, just never actually taken any interest for some reason...
The name makes me think of RPGs, which I'm not that fond of so maybe that's why.

Well I have a good selection of games now, but the one I have found myself playing most is the great Anno 1404: Dawn Of Discovery. Just my kinda game.
