best DVD playing software - what do you use?

well thats philosophy 101 sorted with then....

i have wmp11, winamp, imedian and now vlc.

wmp11, winamp and imedian have the advantage of a accessible media library

imedian works great with my wireless remote and is also great for parties with volume control from anywhere in the house

vlc, plays almost anything and as quoted above is clean and simple at 9mb

winamp is skinable but don't really like it for video as you have to click the vid button for the window to open.

do all the mentioned player support 6.1 surround/ 5.1 upmix

thanks for your comments,

josh

Does WMP11 have its own DVD codec then? I thought MS didn't/couldn't do that?

So you must use a codec pack for WMP11 to play DVDs?

you're correct

however lots of programmes come with them that you can use

my media player appears to be using one that came with Nero of all things ..

Media Player Classic is great. Lightweight and responsive, completely pees all over PowerDVD if you ask me.

There's an option in the preferences you can change to automatically open the vid window.

That said, I never liked winamp for vids. On Windows, I use mplayer classic with ffdshow.

On linux, it's either VLC or mplayer depending on how I feel / what I'm doing.

i'm glad this thread has develeoped some discussion. i hope it has been useful to others in the same position!

i ahve had vlc before but its just sat there as an icon on my desktop, after seeing its backing i'm defo gonna start using it.

pity it doesn't have a media library, even if it was just a simple one with realtime search.
