Best & Easy to Use Remote Access Network Software for Vista

Hi Guys,

Looking to make a download Pc which I can run in the loft during the night, hopefully this should stop Virgin throttling my connection and allow me to get a good nights sleep.

Can anyone suggest some remote access software for Vista that's easy and simple to use through a standard network? Just so I can add downloads from downstairs and turn it off in the morning without needing to go into the loft.

if it's just a download pc, whack xp or 2000 on it

xp + tcpip patch = super fast torrent box (if you're using it for torrents)

remote desktop is built into.. xp pro, vista business, vista ultimate

failing that, vnc does the job nicely.

I was under the impression that Vista was as fast as XP for downloading?

Yeah I thought about remote desktop but thought it was a bit of a security issue if it was enabled.

Not heard of this tcpip patch before, got any links?

This the VNC you were on about? http://www.realvnc.com?

it only effects torrents really.. check event viewer, and look for eventid 4226

if you're getting this, then you're effecting the download speed, it's to do with the number of half-open connections allowed to the pc, with a tcpip patch, you can unlock it to whatever -say 1000 (instead of 10)

remote desktop is not a security issues btw..

i use logmein.com, you can shut it down remotly but it would need to be turned on manually unless you have another way to do it like wake on lan or similar

I don't think the free version of VNC works on vista yet. Ultra VNC does work but if you have UAC turned off it won't let you Ctrl-Alt-Dlt.

I'd just turn remote desktop on, won't be an issue if you are behind a router.

Over LAN, definately use Remote Desktop (RDP/MSTSC/whatever you call it).

Install LogMeIn too, so you can administer from anywhere on the internet without having top open up your router.

Thanks guys, I think I may well stick to Vista for easy networking and use remote desktop as suggested.
