Hi all,

What era or phase do you think was best, or when did you most enjoy PC gaming?

For me, it was around 96-97. Point 'n click adventure games were becoming more popular. Broken Sword one had recently been released. RPG's like Diablo 2 came out and the whole concept of pc building for gaming started to take shape as well as on-line gaming.

Deltaforce 2 moving on to land warror then black hawk down and then joint ops. (skipped Task force dagger)

Gotta agree, but extend that to '98. Basically games evolved A LOT in this time, sparking mainstream online multiplayer (Half Life Counterstrike, TFC). Plus great Co-Operative games where people can take different roles like the Rainbow Six series, Hidden and Dangerous and Commandos.

3D games were making a massive leap also with the likes of the above, plus Conflict: Freespace (oh my god what an amazing game!!).

Just got to add, you also got a great big box with your CD in, which was cool, even though every game had a different size box!! :D :p

I'd go with 96 (specifically June 22nd) through to about 99. It was the advent of 3d cards, when graphics caught up with developers imaginations, but before graphics became more important than imagination. It was the era of online gaming and mod scenes - community involvement was massive because it was relatively new and the community small, and everyone felt part of it. And, towards the end, it was the era of Half-life, which reminded everyone how good single player games could be.

When i first took up online gaming - the Half-Life mods were still new and fresh and seemed to involve the majority of online gamers. The result of which is people all felt part of a huge community, if they wanted to join in on another mod all they had to do was download it for free.

These days when a new online game comes out it typically means a £30 investment every time which leads to fewer people trying it out and thus smaller and much more short-lived communities.

For me it's the mmo age.

I can't think of a period in gaming I've enjoyed more since I first started playing Earth & Beyond

I remember back to when I played the Hidden and Dangerous demo! WOW "the wow started then" lol in my opinion anyway.

it had to be for me personally the time when i was playing heretic off a floppy disk

that game was amazing

deus ex was a real turning point too

i think recently for me it had to be the release of far cry

Quake

And then I moved to Q2 CTF which kept me hooked for few years and then the unreal/Q3... for very little time.

Most played game though was CS though....

And its unbelivable they didnt bother with releasing Counter Strike 2.

Towards the last few years its been nothing but BF1/2 and the occasional decent shooter/RTS games.

Counterstrike 5.2 :)

Counterstrike 3.0! :D

I'd say 98-2001. Heres a few off the top off my head right now:

Half-Life
Quake 3
No one lives forever
Tribes
Deus Ex
Alien vs Predator
GTA III

I'm with you on that. Everyone thought the introduction of the source engine would replicate the original Half-Life mod scene but with better end products considering there was a more advanced engine in place. It never happened unfortunately. Does anyone know why the number of mods has significantly been reduced on the source engine? Is it really that much harder to work with compared with the original HL1 engine.

I've heard the Natural Selection team has decided to make their own game without the source engine. What a game that was!
