I've got fibre internet coming and need to buy a router, what's a good choice? I'm completely new to fibre, having come from 2Mbit ADSL with an old DG834GT. :D

I think you're okay with Zen to use whatever.

My choices would be:

Asus RT-N66U (if you don't need wireless AC)
Asus RT-AC66
Asus RT-AC87

Expensive but damn good routers and plenty of firmware to choose from.

I use an AC68U on Zen Fibre attached to a HG612 openreach modem and haven't had any problems with this at all. Very fast over both wireless and wired

Great, thanks. So all those will be fine for bringing in the fibre from Zen? Is it a special port for fibre, will Zen install a particular cable socket in to the property?

Zen won't do anything, most like a sub-contractor for Openreach, usually Kelly Comms or Quinns etc will come and usually fit a new VDSL faceplate on your master socket, they will bring a white Openreach modem with them, and then its up to you what router you plug in to LAN1 on the Openreach modem. Keep the Openreach modem powered on at all times, dont keep switching it off or DLM will kick in.

Any of those routers will be fine, ultimately decide whether or not you need AC.

The BT Homehub5 is surprisingly good and can be picked up for between £40-£50 around the internizzles.

They don't have a lot of advanced configuration but performance and reliability is spot on.

Aaah, cool. Well I told Zen that I would buy my own hardware rather than use theirs (they're installing the line too). So when they install the line they will leave an Openreach modem with them that I don't need to purchase?

In which case I can just plug in a router I already own and not spend out on new hardware. I just assumed I would need some kind of fibre router/modem.

You need the BT Openreach modem, unless you have a VDSL modem in your router, but they aren't very common and still pretty pricey I believe.

I've got a Mikrotik on the end of my line, but have issue with the ECI modem and the auto negotiation. But I just have a switch between them, I could fix my getting a Huawei modem, just not got around to it.

I'd double check that the DG834GT is suitable for the a FTTC line, as it's not a RJ11 that you'll connect with. You need to make sure it has an Ethernet WAN port to connect to the modem with.

I have a WNDR4000, that'll be fine won't it? Tempted by the ASUS units but think this will keep me going for the time being if it's compatible.
