I know it only breakfast but I've got a real hankering for fish finger sandwiches tonight! I'm off shopping later so what's the best fish fingers to buy? Is it Birds Eye or something else?

I've tried a few brands from various places like Asda, Tesco, etc. (including their own), and Birds Eye has to be my favourite. The others felt and tasted "cheap" and not really like fish, whereas the Birds Eye one was more authentic in a way.

I'm not a big fan, but the kids like them. These seem the best: Sainsburys TTD chunky ones (these are massive) or Jamie Oliver ones.

Best ones are home made, obviously. More like goujons though. it's pretty easy but messy. I use something like pollock or maybe sole.

But, he's putting them in a sandwich. I'm going to guess the idea of making his own probably won't appeal too much :D

Nothing better than a fish finger sandwich, but lately I been buying Birds Eye 'Simply Breaded Haddock or Cod Fillet' (box of 4) & using one or two them for a large fishy sandwich.

get some white fish and some panko breadcrumbs and make your own - pretty easy and tastes much better

Have to agree with this.

Mix flour and salt in one bowl, beaten egg in another, panko breadcrumbs and black pepper in the third. Double coat each fillet and store them in tupperware. Make sure you separate the layers with greaseproof.

Battered > breaded. Also partake of the old fish finger sarnie from time to time. Also the old mini pizza sarnie. Infact, theres probably not that many frozen produce I wouldn't eat in sarnie form.

This is how I layer my fishy sarnie! (bottom to top!)

Bread (Buttered)
Harry Ramsden's Mushy Peas
Battered Cod or Haddock
Salt + Pickled Onion Vinegar
(Optional Ketchup)
Bread.

Lovely!

As an alternative,

Bread (Buttered)
Heinz Baked Beans
Battered Cod or Haddock
Salt + Pickled Onion Vinegar
(Salad Creme)
Bread.

For those, want something tasty, but can't be arsed to cook much.

I'm gonna try your first suggestion next time, it sounds lovely. I just ended up getting some Birds Eye ones in the end though cos I can't be bothered to make my own.

Ha fish finger sandwiches, glad to see there are other fans of this food delight :)

I normally buy Birds Eye or Youngs but am open to other suggestions also.

Please do try with pickled vinegar. The best is from Garners Pickled Onions. It really makes a difference! To the point that I just wouldn't bother with normal vinegar.
