Hi,

Sorry, this is another which graphics card thread :)

I'm currently upgrading my pc - as its over 4 years old, that pretty much means everything so I'm trying to keep costs down a bit. I've currently got a X800 XT graphics card, and am debating between the GTX 260 and the ATI 4870. Probably going to try to buy second hand from ebay, where they are both about £110-130ish. Now I know from reading on the forums that most people think the 4870 is a faster card, but also reading around there's mention of unstable drivers, low minimum frame rates, and it being picky about the games it runs without lots of crashing. Is this still the case as I'd rather have stability than super speed if the difference isn't great? Also, in terms of future proofing (if there is such a thing!) would the extra memory on the 260 make much difference? I tend to run games at 1600x1200 and am not looking to upgrade my monitor until it breaks :) Would really appreciate any help.

you shouldnt have a problem with either, i run my 4870 with every game i have fault free. Crysis, Lost Planet, Grid, NFS, C&C, Stalker, Bioshock, TRA etc, the list goes on. The only question might be which mobo you get

Get a 4870 1gb its better than both the standard 4870 and 260 and around the same price new on here. Some reviews state that the extra memory gives a smoother gameplay experience than both the cards you mention. Just seen your resolution i think any of the 3 cards mentioned will serve you well.

260 for consistency for me personally, my 4870 had higher max frame rates but they didn't half fluctuate. 260's OC extremely well. Both good cards but its up to you. And ofc, the NV card is going to perform better in Crysis where FPS does actually count and not in games where the framerates are 150+
