I've get a number of DV tapes from my old camcorder I would like to convert into something a bit more compact (currently RAW .avi files (13gb/h))..

Im currently encoding these into H265 MKV files using VidCoder (13gb vs 1.3gb), but not sure if this is the best approach.. These are videos of the children growing up so want them to be best possible quality and have support going forward.

If anybody else has done something similar, what did you end up doing?

I recorded a load of old mini DV tapes a few years ago - the file size was ridiculously large for the quality of the recording so I used Handbrake to compress the .avi files into MP4 files and the quality was no different at a fraction of the size of the avi's

Just remember there will be little point increasing their resolution from original.

I've run long records through resolve to punch up the colour and contrast on then which has worked well for me to make the look better as well.
