evening all,

I'm looking for some half decent free antivirus software.

I have been using AVG for quite a while and tbh is has let me down.

Having just done a fresh XP install on my Pc I have been thinking i might try something new.

any ideas???

cheers guys

I use aVast and no problems with it. Never really had it find a virus though so I could be infected and not know but tbh I'm fairly safe in my habits and touch wood never had a major infection. But it doesn't give me issues.

Comodo is another that's getting a lot of attention recently but I tried it on a mates PC and it kept making a BF2 patch fail to install until I disabled it and haven't tried it again.

For a comment on their effectiveness I shall tell you a story. Last week my friend, not computer savvy at all, asked me to look at his XP machine as it was running very slow and he was having crashes and all sorts of other problems. For some reason, probably his misses, Antivir had been uninstalled. I originally installed it for him just after he got the pc. He had had no problems until that point.

I installed Avast and it detected no less than 20 viruses including about 8 trojans - now we know why it was running slowly. Avast nuked the lot and everything is back to normal. I also ran Adaware (which he had not been updating or using obviously) and it found about 50 odd pieces of malware. Moral of the story is simple, use Avast or Antivir with a spyware scanner and keep them updated! :)

If you want a free av I would recommend Avast. Use it on my laptop at home and its nice. :)
I use NOD32 on both of my Windows 2003 Server machines.

Like it a lot!
Ahem! Best FREE antivirus. ;)

Congrats AJUK for fixing it.

Did you slap his missus with a keyboard for borking the PC? :D

That was top of the freebies. :D I can't remember which product won.. Wasn't one I heard of. Was in PC Pro about August time iirc.

edit - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Avast.
Used it for well over a year. It is Perfect for me & it's Free.

well i've gone for antivir.

i hope it'll keep my machine clean.

I think i'll stick a post it note on the side of the screen for the mrs......

"do not uninstall antivir"

;):D

I would recommend AVG antivirus.

I was using NOD32 before and I think it is by far the best AV around. But as I haven't had a virus for about 5 years now I can't see the point in paying out £26 a year when there are free AV's around that are not too bad.

I am impressed with AVG so far. It seems VERY light on resources and updates regularly.
I don't know how good it is at detecting viruses because I haven't had any for so long. :) Commonsense + firewall + AVG should help protect against viruses. :)

I used to use AVG, and still do on my laptop.

but i had a several nasty virus which it couldn't pick up and if it did it could remove.

I'm happy with what i got now.......

.....Touch wood.
