I've recently just gone through setting this all up.

Can steam videos on my phone from my home server (12Mb up connection) over 3G then get home and continue where I left off in my living room or bedroom.

Airplay it does everything I need, plus its free, plus, you can turn off your computer from your iPad to save you getting up!

You can use it as a server too. I've only tried this using VLC on my mac, not my iPad though.
