After recently getting some of my accounts hacked I'm after a free AV. With not much experience of them before, which is the best to get?

Cheers

All Rubbish. I work in PC repair and virus' spyware and adware just seem to go through all of the free ones as if they are not even there.

Spend £13 on Norton AntiVirus OEM IMO.

I don't mind spending money on one, but the opinion just seems to be so divided on which is best value for money. Had bad experiences with Norton in the passed. :/

I can't get over 44 people choose Norton/Symantec over some of the other ones how bizare even over Avast Pro! Whaaaat.

MSE. ;)

What a load of crap.
If you want a free one then go AVAST! Free Home User, in my previous post. If you decide to go for a pay version, ESET Smart Security 4. Norton is just aweful, so is McAfee.

I keep seeing these 'Norton is awful' etc. from a few here, but with no evidence/statistics to back up that claim? I'm sure you'll find version 2011 is one of the strongest internet security software's out there.

Anyway @OP, as said above.. go Avast if you want a free solution.

Now I'm not saying that you should make your decision based on a single review, but the AV-TEST Product Review reports are somewhat helpful, just click on the Report PDF links beside the products your interested in.

We fix a computer with a virus literally every day here. Have been doing it for years. So these are my experiences.

Mcafee is poo. Utter rubbish. Slow and useless. right up to the latest version.
MSSE and AVG let in virus' like there's no tomorrow. Fine if you're careful with what you click on links, but to the layman they're **** poor protection. Avast 5 also.

Avast 6 has improved things with its sandbox feature, but that's annoying, and generally is still prone to infection.

Norton 2009 onwards is a totally different ball game to what they had previously. excellent piece of software, great protection and the least resource hungry AV that I've used. I've installed it on ancient machines with no problems. which you can't say the same for Kaspersky AV. Eset AV is good, but security pack is too bloaty..

Do not bother with Norton 360, even Internet security is not necessary. standard Norton AV is very very good kit that will provide more protection than any of these free ones..

Never had any issues with Avast 6 ,it's a proven fact paid versions offer nothing over free ones protection wise,I even leave it on in gaming because you don't notice it.
Avast 6 free version has some nice features ie gaming mode options, low resources to name a few.
