What free file encrypter has the strongest encryption and also has an option that destroys the encryted file if the user hasnt entered the correct password in a set amount of times?

For encrypting a folder of about 5mb in size containing mainly documents and .txt files.

Thanks

Are you encrypting it for yourself or is it to be sent to others?
Self deletion upon failure would require it to be loaded into memory in some way. Or controlled by an external app.

I don't know of any that destroy themselves on a limited number of attempts, but there are encrypted usb sticks that offer that function.

Encryption software usually offers a choice of encryption algorithms, with AES being the 'standard'. Providing you use an encryption algorithm that is currently valid and not something like DES, the main factor contributing to strength is the length of the encryption key - the longer the better.

Take a look at Truecrypt to make an encrypted container:

Truecrypt.

Rather than looking to destroy data, you could set-up a hidden volume. Essentially you have a strong password for what you want to keep private, and a not so strong password. If a user guesses your not so strong password they think they've found your data but in reality they haven't, it's still hidden away. It's very easy to set this up in TC.
