I am looking into using SIP for a business start-up. There are quite a few free SIP applications out there though.

Anyone have any experience with these or can recommend a good one?

Do you want a IP-PBX? If so asterisk if you're after a linux option or 3CX if you're a Windows guy and the free version does what you want.

Or go with a hosted IP-PBX and get softphones like 3CX also has a Windows/android installer.

Excellent - I will look into 3CX as I use windows, thanks.

Can you recommend a service provider? I have been looking at draytel, but I was wondering if there are any cheaper ones out there?

I need to keep startup costs down to an absolute minimum.

Ok, I have 3CX installed and I'm ready to sign up to a service provider. I have to be able to record verbal contracts though so does anyone know if 3CX allows you to do this?

If you use the Windows softphone then yes, you can do this client side. To do it server side requires the paid for version of 3CX.

I'm struggling to get the Windows softphone setup - Will this run stand alone ort do I need to install anything else?
