best freeware for ripping dvds

hi all, I have a lot of dvds that I would like to rip and watch over my network from the media centre.

whats the best prog as I have never done it before and whats the optimal compression format for best size/quality?

DVD Decrypter for ripping, and MeGUI is by far the best for encoding,
only problem with MeGUI is no one is prepared to actually learn how to use it, so they resort to one click encoders and other crap like SUPER or handbrake

AutoGK isnt too bad either

Either DVD Decrypter or DVDFab HD Decrypter for ripping to HDD and either AutoGK or HandBrake for encoding to compressed video file...

DVD Decryter and I used to use Auto GK but handbrake uses all 4 cores in my Quad to 100% where Auto GK didn't (about 40%) so you get much better speeds with handbrake.

There is also the option of mkv files and H.264 Encoding.
