Best freeware word processor?

I'm looking for a decent freeware word processor, preferably one that doesn't take up too much space/recources and doesn't require you to install an office suite. I've tried OpenOffice but it seems to take up several hundred megs even if you only intall Writer, and the other stuff I've found is a bit basic. Are there any decent, light-ish-weight progs out there?

Abiword is the only other alternative i've tryed. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Both the above are different programs to MS Word so it might be lacking or hiding features.

There are Portable versions of Office and Abiword :

try and find a copy of word97. should cost about 50p nowdays.

I use Open Office and find it pretty useful for the odd time I need a spreadsheet or a document

For Spread sheets i use : gnumeric
its a little flacky sometimes when using .xls files but its a better and faster option to OpenOffice.

TBH the only thing i use at home is spread sheets.
I use openoffice to recover files that word doesn't open (usually due to comments/track changes)
