Moving to a new place, and wanting to take my old router with me but it needs a FTTC modem. Is the HG612 still the best modem to go with? Or are there other alternatives that I should consider?

Are you currently with Virgin Media or something? You aren't obliged to leave your existing Openreach modem in the property when you move out.

Was living with the parents, but they don't need the extreme AC68U for their uses so will drop it to something lower (they always bugged me about it being too big). And it's an ECI modem anyway so they can keep that :p.

Cheers, I'll grab the HG612 3b then.

As a modem or as a router?

It's quite possible it can be bridged to act as a modem but that would make it expensive for that usage.

Both, but it is usually used as a modem (popular as it is a similar size to the HG612, so handy for wall mounting etc). It's a perfectly decent router too, but a bit short on ram compared to other Zyxel routers. RRP is ridiculous, but bargains often show up on ebay.

You can't just blanket say HG612, it's dependant on what chipset is in the cabinet.

You’re talking about marginal differences. You aren’t going to have a situation where a HG612 isn’t going to work.

At different times BT gave me HG612 and ECI modems and the difference wasn’t worth worrying about.

As above, the only significant difference was once unlocked (60 secs work) the HG612 will run other connection types making it more versatile. You could get DDWRT running on an ECI with a little work, but either make decent FTTC modem options and for the money are very hard to beat.

If you can get a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A for a reasonable price off ebay, it may be better than the HG612. Personally, I’ve used a Draytek Vigor 130 and the Zyxel in bridge mode. The Zyxel, on my line, synced 10Mb higher on the downstream than the Draytek. Was quite surprised there would be such a difference considering I’m on a ECI cabinet and the Zyxel has a Broadcom chipset. Whether that would happen on another line, I don’t know.

Don't believe the ECI's support G.INP on Huawei cabs where HG612's do.

With the drop to 3db SNR and G.INP activating I gained 12Mb sync over my HomeHub5.
