Best GFX card for £200

As it says in the title, I'm looking for the best video card I can grab for £200.

I was considering a 7800GT a few weeks ago, but seeing at the 79xx series is out the prices of those are sure to drop.

The card will be used mainly for gaming at resolutions of 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

Seeing the ATI price drops has got me thinking... I want an Nvidia card but am tempted to spend £20 more and get a x1800xt card.

Any suggestions guys?

The 7900GT is very much within your price range. The X1800XT 256MB is marginally faster but either is a good buy. Looking at the benchmarks (poor guide I know) the 7900GT should score about 9200 in '05 and the X1800XT about 9800 (thanks easyrider ;)). However in '06, I think the 7900GT scores more. So it's even stevens really. They both have an annoying fan :p and the 7900GT runs cooler. Really, it's up to you. You could get a 7900GT and then SLi it later if you have an SLi board but in all honesty a lot of people don't do this. If you prefer nV, then get that :).

Yeah, after the 1800 series price crash they are very affordable.

Personally I'd grab the 7900 GT and get a better fan for it. Cheaper in the long run plus it should clock nicely if you need (from what I've seen, no first-hand experience).

My 7900 GT scores 9822 in 05 and thats comparing it to your overclocked x1800.The first score was a driver issue. Now rectified with beta 84.20's ;)

This is the same score as your x1800 xt 512mb overclcoked card.

Others have been getting 10000 in 05 and I'm not far off.The 7900 GT's clock better than the x1800's so if you into overclocking then get the 7900 GT

I think its more like the 7900's are easier to overclock. The X1800's as far as I have read and tried myself clock very well. :) (plus you still have 500 or so point to go to beat my 05 score of 10380 ;) )

Just to add to the op's question isn't the cheapest 7900gt on here over £250?

That would make the X1800XT 256 a much better buy.

HI there

Did someone on here not get 11k on 3D Mark 2005 with their Connect3D X1800 XT 256MB purchased from here?

Yep someone with a X1800XT 256 has over 11k.

I could as well although I havn't pushed the card futher than 725/1660 simply because I havn't.

EVA2000 on guru3d has had his past 12k.

TBH at the moment the X1800XT 256 offers the best bang for buck in th £200 ono category.

Well, since the X1800XT and the GeForce 7900GT are mostly even, if really falls down to which manufacturer you like best. :) Or... indeed... get the cheaper one.

Come on guys its early day over at extremesystems 11k is broken with 7900 GT on stock volts and after market cooling.

Gibbo whens the VF900 here?

Also the OP wants a nv card and you all suggest the x1800 xt when it clearly isn't the overall faster option.

Actually easyrider, I got 9823 stock ;). No matter though, I said earlier they are pretty much exactly the same anyway. At this price point it comes down to preference.

Just got 9911 so 10k is easily gonna be achieveable not bad for what I paid for it :)

Can't wait to try the modded bios that feeds 1.3v and 1.4v to the gpu.
But after market cooling will be needed need to get that VF900 :)

Get the X1800 XT, no questions. Its faster than the 7800GTX & 7900GT. Its also very much cheaper. Really you cant go past these prices! :)
The X1800XT is also a proven great overclocker, if you like extra performance for free!

Coming from an Nvidiot fanboy, thats something, How about actually offering the guy some true advice dude!

Cant seem to find cheaper prices on OcUk for the 7900GTs - sorry!

You alone have posted 5 times in this thread trying to convince this guy to buy a slower & costlier card. Everyone else who posted states get the X1800Xt - but you. True fanboyism!

It seems he can get the 7900 GT for less

I'll get whats the best card for the money regardless of who makes it.

But at the price I got my 7900 GT for ,and you can get them cheaper now, the x1800 was not an option for me.

I got it cheaper than x1800 and wanted the option for SLI.

Plus the x1800's have no resale value what so ever At least my 7900 GT will hold its value much better when I come to sell it and upgrade.

Investing in a x1800, a has been card IMO, is the wrong thing to do.Money wasted for little or no performance gain over the 7900 GT.

This is not being a fanboy.
This is being smart :)

the guy said he was also tempted by the ATi Solution as of the price but now the GT is costing 234 and the Xt is costing 211 so really the XT is cheaper now.

Performance wise they seem very very close so really either or tbh! Up to you at the end of the day man

So he is considering ATi as well
