I've been hunting high and low for a graphics card for my brother in laws computer.
I want to put in a DX10 card as it'll probably have to last a couple of years, the only problem is that with a budget of £120 inc delivery I dont have that much options.

It's basically down to ATI's new 38** range or Nvidia 8600 series.

.....................

Is that about the most bang for my buck I will manage or is the ATI 38** series a better card?
I'm not that well clued up on mid range cards so wondered if anyone could point me at the best card for my budget.
Thanks

Please read the faq re. competitors pricing.

The 3850 512mb would do better than the 8800GT 256mb in higher resolutions or crysis becuse of the extra vram despite the lack of graphics horsepower.

256mb doesn't cut it these days. :)

Surely even that depends on the resolution?

Surely the 8800gt 256mb would wipe the floor with it in 1280x1024 for e.g. ? :)

Palit cards are more or less unbadged gainward cards... tho imo they don't have as good quality control as gainward... possibly the cards that didn't make the grade for the gainward bliss/glh lines... that said they should work fine...

Sort of right, both Gainward and Palit are owned by the same holding. Gainward don’t manufacture cards, they have no facilities of their own. All their cards are manufactured in the Palit factory. But components and assembly of the Gainward cards are controlled by Gainward themselves.

Do you have any info to support this? I know it does make sense but any benchmarks you have seen which support this, i'm currently looking to buy a new card and don't want to spend more than i need to & will be running @ 1600x1200

256 VRam will struggle at 1600x1200, many games use upwards of 300-400 mb VRam when full textures are used.

Omg you moron, i never linked to a competitor, I linked to a manufacturer!! I never at any point said which competitor was selling the item!

There was a post above mine that's been removed asking for a link to where to get the card from, the guy who posted had 1 post so I thought I'd point out that you cannot ask for links to competitors.

I await an apology

Hence my "more or less" :D
