Best GPU for £200?

£200 you either get a ati 6950 or a nvidia msi 560ti 2gig version dont get the normal 560 and for newer games vram is becoming more important so id get the 2gig version of the 560ti if you go for nvidia over ati

Yip any 2gb 6950 or 2gb 560 will be best option

If you prefer Nvidia then I suggest this card, if you prefer AMD/ATI then I suggest this card. If £200 is the absolute max. you have to spend then get the first card I suggest, if you could afford either then other factors come into play, the 560Ti is cheaper, has Physx (FWIW) and the potential for 3D, the 6950 will be cheaper to run as it uses less power, has the potential for Eyefinity and will scale better in crossfire than the 560Ti will in SLI (should you ever want to double up).

You don't even know if the OP's mate has the ability to use SLI or Crossfire on their system.

And everyone is assuming they have the necessary PSU etc. to run the cards being discussed.

FYI, ATi cards have 3d potential aswel. CUDA is the only reason to pick an nVidia card over ATi imho.

and physx, for some people. i personally don't see physx going anywhere but the scrapheap though due to nvidia keeping it exclusive to their cards. devs will rarely bother to code something which only ~40% of their customers will see and if they do it'll just be something cosmetic and gimmicky.

so i guess i'm agreeing with you.

Correct, but that is because that info. wasn't posted. If the OP would like to post the aforementioned info. then perhaps we could modify our advice if need be.

FYI gaming support for 3D on ATI/AMD cards is very poor.

For 3D gaming Nvidia is the only realistic choice.

Short term, I agree with you. ATi 3d is open which will eventually lead to more choice for the user, and maybe eventually higher quality. Right now, nVidia's done what it always has - horded the rights to all their **** so you HAVE to buy their stuff, which has a plus side of being controlled hardware which is easier to dev for and thus is currently a better choice. I do see ATi 3d improving dramatically over the next year or 2 as it's still reletively new.

Think of it like PCs and Consoles, games devs have a lot easier time on consoles than PCs as there's so many hardware (and software) combinations that form a "pc" whereas an Xbox 360 is always an Xbox 360. In the analogy, ATi are the PC and nVidia the console.

There's a point lodged somewhere in there, it's almost 4am though and I'm rather sleepy - so forgive the incoherency.
