Best GPU for £250

Hello,

I recently bought a box with an AMD Phenom X4 9550 Processor, 4gb Ram, Vista ...

In that box I have put an X1950XTX with a 500WT PSU. It all runs fine, everything's sweet.

However, ATI are dropping support for that card in Linux, which is no fun. So, I've decided its time to drop the X1950XTX and get something more "this gen".

However, I'm on a budget of £250 (there abouts).

Can anyone suggest a good GPU (maybe even nVidia this time around) that I can get for £250? I've only got one PCIE board too, so, no SLI'ing for me .

either the cheapest 285GTX (Leadtek) or the most expensive 260GTX (BFG Maxcore) both being just over or just under your budget.

I wouldnt go that high.

4870 1GB is an excellent single card and can be bought at £160. £100 will not get you enough extra performance in my book

Hmm... depends on your preference.

I purchased a xfx 4870 1gb 2 weeks ago and really couldnt deal with the heat and of course the noise.
I luckily came across a 280gtx for £205 new and loved the idle 42c temp as compared to the 71c of the ati.
If you can find a 280 then I would suggest that. Only wish I had the money at the time when OcUk had their sale

4850x2 wouldn't be the best, as he'd have to shell out for a new PSU on top of that to power it, as hes only got a 500w.

Maybe an ati 4870 1gb or nvidia gtx 260 either of them will save you quite a bit of cash. If you can find a gtx 280 or 285 in that price range then maybe go for that.

I don't think that's the case, he just mentioned that he wanted a new card because support has been dropped for his older card, and that he is willing to look at nividia cards.

I'd recommend a 48701GB or a GTX260 nothing else is worth the premium unless you're willing to go for a dual GPU card.

48701GB is a little faster than the GTX260 though.

But, I'd wait for a month or 2 as ATi are apparently releasing new cards in April I think.
