Sorry for being a little bit lazy but as im no expert when it comes to graphics cards I would like someone tell me what is the best card I can get for £290 from ati & nvidia? Also could someone explain to me why most ati cards seem to have higher core clock, memory clock and processing cores and higher vram for a similar price to the equivalent nvidia card? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

The best GPU would possibly be either a 6970 from ATI or if your lucky you could find a GTX570 with 2.5GB of Vram.

An important question is do you have a PSU sufficient enough for these types of cards?

Also could someone explain to me why most ati cards seem to have higher core clock, memory clock and processing cores and higher vram for a similar price to the equivalent nvidia card?

To keep it simple, its not what you got but how you use it that counts;)

Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650M High Performance 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply is the one ill be using, + i kind of new its between these two cards but i was hoping for a link if possible.

According to XFX site 650W is the minimum recommend (on the HD 6970 at least) so should be no problem.

Maybe someone else can confirm though.

650watt is more than enough for a single 6970/570. I wouldn't recommend getting a normal gtx570 as the 1280mb of vram is just not enough, simple as! I'm not the guy that'll recommend which one to get but I know that the 6970 requires a 6pin & a 8 pin power connector and the 570 is two 6pin ones. Here is a comparison taken from Anandtech

[EDIT] oh the link is above :P

If you're sticking to budget then buy the 6970, otherwise get the 570 imo.

Have you considered going for the 6950 instead of a 6970, there's really very little difference. The best one on this site looks to be the Toxic, which has a good chance of flashing to a 6970. If you didn't want to do that you could still overclock it.

how many times does it have to be said that you DON'T flash anything on the toxic, the modified bios is already included and all you do is flick a switch.

but at just £20 more you're better off getting the his icq 6970.

Oh well, I guess I made a mistake. ;)

I and others, judging by the mistake highlighted in your post, forgot about this with regard to the Toxic. Calm down dear, it's only a commercial. :D

+1 . OP is probably better off going with a 2Gigabyte 6970 :)

How come most of the ati cards are 2gb where as the equivalent nvidia card with 2gb is like £40 more?+shall i definitely get the ati card even though nvidia has cuda and both programs i use to edit utilize this? and it was answered by nvidiot before but i didn't really get his answer, how come ati cards have better core clock, mem clock and processing cores than nvidia although there the same price ? cheers.
