My friend as an old i5 system I think 4460. It as an ssd and 16gb of ram. He son (7yo) wants to play Minecraft the base game only at 1080.. what's gpu is a good match new or used.

I was thinking like an rx570??

If it's Minecraft Java Edition then I'd look at nVidia cards.
AMD's OGL drivers under Windows are pretty poor and so their cards will get outperformed by a nVidia card a tier or two lower.
Or running AMD under Linux is the other option as they perform much better there than under Windows.

Their is a test driver floating around that is meant to improve AMD's OGL perf by a lot but not seen much testing of this outside of benchmarks and no idea when/if it'll release.
Also don't know if it'll work ok with things like optifine, lithium etc.

so what should he be looking at GTX970/980?

Is he planning on the Java or Bedrock version? If Bedrock, any GPU from both sides are fine as it doesn't use OpenGL.

If Java, then Nvidia will be better, while AMD does have an upcoming update to improve OpenGL performance, I've only seen it with Windows 11 and RDNA1/2 cards (5000/6000 series). No idea if it will come to Windows 10 and older GPUs. However even then 580 is fine on 1080p and if he's only planning on sticking with vanilla. You can use Fabric loader with Sodium, Lithium and Starlight to vastly improve the Java's version performance. Have a friend who uses the same mods on the Java version with a 580 and uses shaders on top of that, and gets about 30-40 FPS on 1080p. So without shaders I would imagine it would easily be in the hundreds.

For future proofing sake though I would look at anything 1060 6GB tier minimum: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/gpu-hierarchy.18951645/

agree 1060 6gb or 1650 super would be a decent bet

wouldn't get a nvidia 9xx gpu unless super cheap as it doesn't support freesync

thanks for the help guys but.. when i called round yesterday he had been into an high street store to see about GPU's and the had a very good sale on laptops.

so ne now as an i5 / 3050ti laptop for his son to use

Well, should still perform well, I think the laptop 3050 Ti is around 1060 performance anyway depending on power/thermal limits.

i was thinking 1650 performance but yer it should cope with Minecraft its not a game that produces a lot of heat, when my boy plays it the fans on the system dont come on
