Best GPU for this rig....

In games 670's usually are around 60c to 70c with no overclock, pretty quiet unless temp goes over the 70c then max fan speed kicks in, but remember this is an untouched untweaked no fan profiles set or anything. You can set pretty much anything to your own liking.

The 2gb ram will not be an issue unless your going to buy a massive display or triple monitors. The 670 is more and with the 770 its a bit slower but for £249 its worth it, Now the £219 7950 is cheaper still and a good performer,. So the choice is yours, A slower card for £219 a faster one for £249 or an even faster one for £330

Also the 660ti is faster than the 7950 when the 660ti is overclocked.

I don't think the kid will overclock the card, unless he really wants to play around.....and risk it.....considering his limited knowledge.

So at stock settings.........???

I don't think the HIS 7950 boost will fit in that case as the blower takes up a bit more than 2 slots.

The coolermaster advanced 120 has no exhaust so you really should stick to a card which exhausts out the back.

So are the 7950s.

A typical max OC 7950 will be slightly faster than a typical max OC 670.

In that regard, why bother paying more for essentially less when you consider the 2GB of RAM and 256bit memory bus?

It's the 256bit memory bus that is the issue when it comes to turning AA up, or high resolution and or multiple displays.

Also the 660ti is faster than the 7950 when the 660ti is overclocked.

That's all I could hear in my head whilst I read your post.

*facepalm*

Does he definately want a K processor in that case? I've got it and theres not much space above the CPU once the PSU is in so overclocking might be a problem. If hes not going to overclock, I'd be tempted to get a non K i5 and put the saving the GPU

I think the boost above might take up 2.5 slots and looking at my Elite 120 case, it wouldnt fit in.

If the Boost is the same but different coloured cooler as the one they introduced on the 6970 then the 6950: http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-664.shtml

Then yes it is 2.5 slots for the whole thing.

It's a good cooler and gets air from both sides of the intake fan but it is a fatty.

Ahh but no facepalming going on when LtMatt wrote

"So any small lead the 670 has will be wiped out with relative ease if you decide to overclock the 7950"

Same thing.

Does a 7950 overclocked on max details beat a gtx 670 overclocked on BF3 at 1080p? Not in any review i have seen this year.

The Op has already said no overclocking so the 670 is faster. end of.

Soooo funny

MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Boost Edition 3072MB = £240. Comes with four free games that will bring the price down to *around* £200 if you sell the games.

Vs

MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Twin Frozr Power Edition 2048MB = £270. Comes with nothing.

The 670 will be slightly faster at stock in some games. Are a couple of fps worth the extra money? Doubtful. I chose that 670 as all the other cheaper 670's use crappy reference blowers which will be loud and ineffective. (just like Ian)

If he ever did want to overclock, the 7950 will be faster. Overclocking a gpu is pretty easy and definitely worth doing if you need more performance. You never know what he might want to do in the future and imo its nice to have that option if needed. The 670 overclock will be limited as its a voltage locked card unless you get lucky with a golden clocker.

Just my opinion OP but i would go with the 7950, as most agree in this thread. However either card will be fine at the end of the day. :)

Being closer to the budget the 7950 (yes I have one but I'm not biased towards AMD).

Real shame not to overclock them though as the performance increase potential is substantial.
Very happy with my pre-problem TF3.

He may decide to overclock the card, but only as long as the stock cooler attached to the gpu can handle it, as it's going into a pretty small case.

The 7950 Twin Frozr cooler is excellent and will enable high overclocks, as will the HIS 7950 Ice-Q cooler.

Keep in mind that the case your using doesn't have any exhaust fan. only a single 120mm intake which is pretty obstructed, airflow is not great in it.

Heat will build up very easily if using an open air gpu such as the msi twin frozr so its best to stick to a the blower type (reference cards) The HIS blower won't fit in it as it takes up 2.5 slots and will get in the way of the side panel on the case.

Hmm good shout. The HIS cooler dumps most of the heat out the rear but as spixel says you will need to make sure it will fit.

Good call, thanks.
The case was only an initial choice for a small and cheap mini-itx case.
Budget doesn't allow the the likes of the sugo range etc (like mine)

It's a great case for the price, I have one. I did use it with a gpu which has an open air cooler but it was far from a high end card, ran around 10 degrees hotter than in a regular case.

If you haven't got the case yet the front stock fan with it is terribly noisy at any rpm, I'd recommend replacing it with another.

Typical 7950s can be overclocked to become 25%-30%~ faster. And the 670 about 10%-15%~. They are close to begin with the 670 slightly ahead but that changes when overclocked.

Thanks.
Nothing has been bought yet, but the budget iis pretty tight.
May have to move to m-atx for cheaper cases and better handling of gpu's.
