I'm after a GPU upgrade for my system which is only capable of AMD Crossfire configuration (No SLI) with a £400 or so budget. I'm trying to see what the best performance I can get for it. I was thinking of 2x6950, as I can't see any single GPU options that would be faster.

Any thoughts and advice?

Nope, best performance for £400 is indeed crossfire 6950 2GB.

However, if your CPU is just a overclocked Phenom II X4 then you might not get the full performance out of the crossfire 6950 2GB.

I'm using a i2500k @ 4.6ghz with 8GB 1872mhz DDR3 :) The current GPU is a GTX 560 but it's not doing too brilliantly on Battlefield 3 and the motherboard can only do Crossfire setups, hence the query about AMD cards.

400 quid for a gfx card? Wow.
Isnt that a bit overkill? If you have the money, far enough but thats a lot of moolah just for a gfx card. Do you do video editing / graphics work or just play games? If its the latter, it just seems a bit OTT thats all. (Probably start a discussion now on how much people spend on a gaming gfx card.)

I havent played the BF3 beta but everything I throw at my GTX460 For The Win Ed. runs nice and smooth (Crysis 1 and 2, Dead Island etc) at 1680x1050 res. It was nowhere near 400 quid either.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people on here who spends large sums of money on their systems, it's OcUK after all :)
When you buy entire systems for the same amount it does look overkill but enthusiasts always feel it's worth it in the end. You want the best performance, you have to be willing to pay for it.
There are tons of new PC games on the horizon which signals a massive pick-up for the platform, and if there is ever a time to do a serious upgrade, it's now.

<snip> if there is ever a time to do a serious upgrade, it's now.

Whilst that's true, it's actually always the case. In 6 month's time there will be even better cards available and today's enthusiast product will have dropped drastically in price. There will always be something better just around the corner and your big budget graphics card (or CPU, memory, hard drive etc) will be superseded.

As said above, if you want the best you have to shell out for it. If you don't want to shell out you have to accept that you're not going to have the best available.

At one time I was prepared to spend whatever it cost to have the latest hardware. Now my life priorities have changed and I accept that I'm not going to have the latest and greatest.

Yea, but will your 460 handle 1080p.

My 580 is only managing 50-60fps at ultra setting in bf3.

That's right, but six months from now there probably won't be a flurry of new games like there imminently is that would justify the cost. It's an exceptional period right now, with Skyrim, Diablo, Rage, Battlefield and Call of Duty around the corner.

If you're going to wait for the next big thing, you'll wait forever.

Anyway, 2x6950 it is! :)
