Hi all,

I have a Q9550 CPU with an old 9800gt which I would like to upgrade. Now I know the Q9550 is getting old now and will cause a bottleneck so spending hundreds on high end graphics card would be pointless. What would be the best graphics card to get for this CPU? I play at 1900x1200 res.
Thanks

A GTX 570 and overclock your CPU to 3ghz+ and you will be good to go for a couple of years. The Q9550 is a great CPU, just overclock it and you could easily get 3.8-4Ghz with good cooling.

What is the rest of the spec of your PC ? RAM, motherboard, PSU, etc etc.

My system spec is:
q9550 @ 3.15ghz - I was not able to reach higher speeds for some reason? perhaps poor quality ram or mobo?
Custom akasa cooler cooler sith 120mm fan on CPU,
Mother Board, N7AD-SLI
8gb ram ocz pc2 6400 I think its just basic ram
4x750gb hard drives in RAID10 and 1 750gb JBOD
PSU OCZ 850Watt
Graphics 9800gt 1gb @ 740mgz, 1750mgz, 1025mgz

So 560ti 2gb or 570 should be good for me?

If you can afford a 570 then of course it's the better card. However, IIRC it costs more than the 6970 which works out the better card VFM wise.

If you don't like AMD then the card to have would be the 570 :)

However, as much as I know that the word "Wait !" doesn't apply to PC gamers I would wait. Even though it would be very hard for me to.

Give it a week. Nvidia MUST now respond to the 7950. And that means reducing the prices of both the 580 and 570. And that would suck, losing that amount of cash.

About CPU if at any point I attempt to clock it higher then 3177mgz pc just freezes. I tried raising voltages etc doesn’t make any difference. Perhaps its not getting enough power from the motherboard. I know q9550 should overclock easily to at least 3.4ghz I will give it another go later this evening.

I can wait (-: I have been waiting for a while now, I bought another 9800gt of ebay but performance wise it was a disapointment so I got rid of it. I dont really have a preference of ATI/Nvidia just want the best performance for the money I spend (-:

Personally I don't understand this need to always get the absolute best, and usually most expensive kit, a good upgrade from what you have giving you near HD5850 performance would be;

Green team: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 560 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Red team: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6850 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Both have 2GB of ram and would serve you very well I'm sure saving you around £100 on 570 prices...

IMHO,
J.

And how long do you think those cards will remain current with the choice coders now have of making their games big fat and heavy?

Right now yes, those are good mid level cards. It won't stay like that for long now.
