Hi, I recently bought a HIS 7950 to replace my GTX650Ti, unfortunately I've had to return it as my PSU couldn't power it up due to both pci plugs sharing the same line. I cant use a molex adaptor as my lighting and fan controller are using the 2 molex plugs.

So what is the best card that I can get that only uses a single 6 or 8 pin plug. My budget is £200 I don't mind AMD or NVidia.

Current pc spec is:
CPU: i3-3240
MB: Gigabyte z77
PSU: Fractal Design, integra 650W
RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1333MHz
GPU: GTX650Ti 1Gb (being replaced)

ETA: I only plan on a single monitor setup and have no plans to SLI/Xfire. Game that I play are tomb raider, bioshock 3, WOT, various racing sims

a 650w psu sould power your stsyem with the card 7950 no problem....
i would look at the PSU pal. also you know all the plugs on your psu use the same line

OK didn't know they all used the same line, I assumed that set of wires had different voltages and amps. I think as the PCI connectors are one after another on the same wire only so many amps can be delivered to the card.

As the PSU powers the current card using a single 6 pin connector I assume its fine as its only 4 months old.

Hmmmm, I had a smiliar issue recently where the direct cable had a split for 2 6-pin plugs. It wouldn't power the 7950 properly. My assumption like yourself is that the power is essentially getting split in two.
Fortunately I have a semi modular power supply so could run a seperate cable for an additional 6-pin, and this works fine.
No idea why they manufacture PSU's like that with the split power??

Single 12v rail with 54a....that's more than capable to power a tiny 7950!
The shared line for the 8+6 also shouldn't be a problem, my HX650 has the same setup where its a share line and is happy clogging away on my test bench :p

Try with molex adaptors to make sure the card isn't faulty.

I went to maplin (shudder) to get molex adapter and ended up with a Corsair CX600 which has the same problem. Boots fine no card and on my GTX650 and refuses to boot with the 7950. It also has shared line for 8+8.

Does this mean it's likely the card is at fault?

I guess so. Had to set up an RMA on my own HiS 7950 too, hasn't been running correctly at stock speeds and temps are extremely high when the throttling is removed with iTurbo software. Hoping the next one I get (assuming they replace mine) isn't a dud, so same goes for you too! :(

yeah not good, I've been really looking forward to getting mine set up. I think I may now go for a 4gb 670 instead or a 760. I know its coincidence but both amd cards I owned have been duds/poor, while my gtx650 has exceeded expectations

Something odd there, or I can't read properly.

My OCZ ZT650w managed to run 2500k + 7970 Xfire (all at stock) with the second card on molex to PCIE with no probs fwiw **.

Don't see how yours can't manage one 7950...

** I will add that Tommybhoy had to hold my hand and offer comforting assurance before I was brave enough to try it though.
