I'm currently purchasing a new PC with 2 gig of RAM, E6600 and a 8800 GTS 640. what's the best game out for graphics so I can really see what my new machine can do. (would help if it's a fun game to play as well) I guess FPS will be running with the best GFX, any suggestions? (a game I can go out and grab now)

The most demanding is probably Oblivion, but it's not neccessarily the best graphics. Outside scenery is fantastic, but the characters aren't as good. FEAR has fantastic graphics, and is a little less demanding.

FEAR or Prey

I must be absolutely mad here but I thought the graphics in FEAR were terribly average. I had it maxed out and it looked throroughly boring.

My vote would go for Condemned or Prey. The graphics in both were at times breathtaking.

Agreed.

The lighting effects and dynamic fluid surfaces were great in FEAR, but the texture quality and level design weren't anything special.

Prey is okay, probably the best (graphically) of the Doom3 engine games. But I found the gameplay somewhat dull and repetative after a while.

The graphics in stalker are very good in places, if you can stand the bugs, crashes and intermittant poor performance. Overall, I would say take a look at HL2:episode1. It's getting on a bit now, but it should run perfectly at maximum and with the HDR lighting it looks great in places.

The next round of "killer graphics" games - such as Crysis, UT3, bioshock, Alan Wake etc are due 'soon', but keep getting pushed back. These should knock all existing games out of the water.

FEAR, i love the fact that certain things are deformable e.g the concrete walls, floors etc. BF2142 is also lovely looking when maxed out. Prey haas good graphics too but the whole flipping mavity, going through portals, walking on walls gives me a headache after a while :(

I thought that was one of Prey's best features. It took the normal, Doom3 engine spaceship game and gave it a twist [literally]. Also the sequences when you died made it even more interesting and how you could go through portals to get to other parts of the same map. Very intriguing!

They aren't really deformable though - it's all done through decals.

If you shoot a concrete wall / floor, a normal-map texture is applied to represent the hole (ie the polygon shape stays the same, but the perception of depth is achieved by taking the lighting information into account in the texture). If you walk away for a while and come back, the holes are gone.

And yes, I liked the portal effects in prey very much :) Unlike the "die and just fight the flying things with a bow and arrow" part, which irritated the hell out of me!
