Never played before so looking to buy for single player
Best halo for single player?

Is it worth buying a xbox one to play them over my 360?
Well barign in mind the XO version H2 had some mighty updates visually to H2, and all the game got a slight bump in res and all run at 60fps, also you can get Halo: ODST, and its looking like Reach might make it on there as well all into the MCC Collection, which really lets you play all the story.

Halo: Combat evolved - changed the scope of console FPS.
Halo 2: Slight tweaks improved the combat and the scale felt massive at the time.
Halo Reach: Great story
Halo 4: Felt like a better next gen entry than 3
Halo 3: Waited so long and it did not deliver on my expectations.

Halo 2 was a big disappointment for me - the balance that made the above games great was skewed - and ODST and Reach were hit and miss. Although I'd argue the Lost Platoon firefight map in ODST is the pinnacle of Halo's combat and the best example of vs. ai combat in any game ever. And entire game should be built around this gameplay!
I had little faith in Halo 4 and never bothered.
