After some thoughts on the best back up software out of Retrospect HD or even Windows Live OneCare backup, i have both of these at my disposal which is best to use for ease and speed? Or maybe other software that you may have used in the past, all in all i'm going to be backing up to a network access hard drive.

Thanks for your views in advance, :D

I've been messing about with backup software for a while now, to backup about 60gb to an external harddrive (connected via a USB port).

Don't bother with Nero BackItUp. When I chose to split the backup so the chunks would fit onto DVD (in case I ever had to put the backup on DVD), it split the backup into some like 1.7gb files. To top it off, when I restored the backup, I had to patch some large files together again - because Nero was extracting say a 4gb file into 2-3x 1.7gb chunks.

I used Acronis TrueImage on Wednesday night. Yeah, it took a little accustoming to. But it did my backup in one huge file (I didn't bother to split it up this time). And when I restored a massive file, it was there as it should be.

Would have to agree with Acronis True Image, despite being on the verge of just snapping my CD due to every backup being corrupt.

It turned out to be bad memory during a windows install which I guess was corrupting the backups. After a few bios tweeks and an overnight run of memtest to confirm stabilty then a fresh coat of XP all was well.

Extremly easy to use software and very fast at creating and restoring images and if you shop about you can get the latest version for circa £15.

Will also add that this is the only backup software I have used so can't compare it to anything, but it does adsactly what it says on the tin.

True Image is popular around here,

however hate it myself, dosent work for me.

So i use Ghost.. works like a dream. 9 is good for Xp since you can pick it up cheap. Or Ghost 12 / Norton Save & Restore 2 for vista.

I've been using Powerquest drive image for years and not had any problems with it. I believe it's now made by Symantec.
