It depends what you're doing and what type of disk.
Form factor and capacity are dictated by your chasis and your plans.
If it's just for backups you can stick whatever you want in there as capacity is the key factor.
If you're doing other things that will want speed you may want to consider the spindle speed and go for 7200 rather than 5400 on a 2.5" drive. You may also want to look at multiple smaller disks and RAID them or using a small cheap SSD for caching on a larger slower mechanical disk. (chipset dependant)
I know that's vague, I need to know roughly what you plan to use the box for to be more specific.
