best hdr software

GIMP works fine for making realistic hgih quality HDR images. IF you want fake plasticy gimmicky look that was popular a few years back then photomatic is the one.

The best solution is some ND grads and PS.

Thats a bit harsh Photomatrix can produce perfectly subtle images it just depends on how far you push the sliders away from the middle, I also think you'll find it's still pretty popular!

I use a mixture of ND grads and Photomatrix and simple layering techniques in G!mp. (Not all at the same time)

Photomatix can do some good HDR stuff, but what most people actually use it for is tone-mapping. There is an important difference there! if you want to do plain HDR then PS will do fine, but if you want to get the crazy colours and things then you'll need Photomatix.
