HI all,

Sadly my good old headphones decided to die during this, and wanted to know what the best over ear headphones were currently. Not worried about Bluetooth or Noise cancellation just comfort and sound.

Thanks,
Dan

For the office I have some beyerdynamic DT 770 PROs in 250ohms, but I hear the 80ohms are good too. A little over 100 though.

Do you have an amp to power?

+1 for the DT770 Pros. I also have the 250ohms version and would also recommend them but they require a amp to get the best of them. I have a portable FiiO amp for that reason.

If you can ignore the 'Creative' branding on them their Aurvana Live! are also good for the money. There is a AL2 but never heard it to compared it to the AL1.

If OP doesn't have an amp, DT770 80 ohm will be a better choice. As already mentioned, 250 ohm version will be more in need of an amp.

Other than impedance, the other main difference between them is; 250 ohm version has coiled 3m cable and 80 ohm version has straight 3m cable.

Should probably point out that there is a 32ohm version too but I have read that it does not sound as good as the others. Cannot cite as to why, but it seemed to be a theme when I researched it before I purchased.

I also use mine with a FIIO amp.

do you want open or closed?

closed = better bass + noise isolation
open = better soundstage and detail

to keep it simple.

i see ppl have mentioned AKG 702 and DT 770. DT 770 is solid but it is your closed headphone so all the cons of a closed headphone. .
AKG 702 is very open, amazing soundstage and imaging, very good at detail retrieval but the bass is very pathetic so if you're expecting bass, you will be VERY dissapointed.

If you can find a deal on Fidelio X2HDR they are the more fun open headphone compared to the AKG 702 and are more bassy than open counterparts. They are also low impedance so will not require a dac/amp to run off of to reach near its full potential.

for someone new to headphones, i would almost certainly suggest fidelio X2HR over AKG 702 if going for openback. I prefer the AKG but they can do with a bit of power (that means buying an amp and makes them quite crap to use with portable devices on the go).. which makes them very annoying.. and of course the lack of bass means films will lack impact etc.

this is all considering you want a wired headphone.

if you want wireless, just go for whichever sony is in ur price range bluetooth as they have good soundstage and eq for the price.

if you want some end-game portable wireless headphones and can triple your budget, THX pandas. :)

Ah fair enough. I think I would have gone Fidelio over 990s but either is excellent. I think 990s look way more stylish too. They are a very sexy headphone. X2HR and AKG look a bit special in a bad way.

Hi,

I did get 990's as someone said above and got a offer for them cheaper than 770's i was seeing so went with that.

They are nice feel comfortable. I don't have an amp currently but am looking at buying a small unit for on my desk.
I only where them when at my PC i have Bluetooth headphones for when out and about. And are loud and clear enough through that.

Best sounding I've had so far and they look beautiful.

Thanks all for your help.
