I don't have an awful lot of money to spend, nor a lot of room. But I want to buy something like a rowing machine or bike to help me get my sweat on.

It will be used for about 30 mins a day to make me fitter.

What do people recommend I buy? I've been recommended a rowing machine as a good "all rounder"

Don't bother with home gym equipment. Apart from it being boring it's poor quality, especially the cheap stuff you're after.

Total waste of money.

Use the cash to go swimming, play squash, badminton, or any of the other suggestions already posted. ;)

My treadmill cost £800 and my exercise bike cost £300 but buy yourself a decent pair of running shoes (£50 plus) and hit the streets instead.
Put some of the money to a flash based MP3 player to keep you company.

What he says.

You could try 'Clean & Press'. Light weight 10-20kg. 20 reps per set. 1 rep per 10 seconds – 20 reps = 3min 20secs. Rest 2-3 mins. 5 sets in 30 mins. STRICT FORM. Don't drop the weight back on the floor, bend knees and place it back down, then stand up, then start the next rep. Excellent strength and aerobic builder. Will work you better than any exercise machine. If you do get bored, you’re outlay hasn’t been that much.
