Best i5 for gaming???

Your right, ryzen is no good for web surfing or playing music or checking emails etc.
I'm too scared to run word on my 1700, its just too slow.

Depends on what kind of web surfing... Watching Twitch is absolutely overkill, but watching douyu.com may not be so easy, since there are just too many MingLee viewers spamming in the chat (population issue :D). Sadly, these flash (not even html5) UI's performance is bound to 1-2 threads (hence focused on IPC). With a Ryzen you will get lag during periods of bursts of chats.

Common sense would be that most games do not use more than 4C4T, but most games would benefit from the great single-thread performance of the i5. You idealism only look into multi-thread scores and these scores are theoretical scores and do not reflect the actual advantage in 30 games.

Mate, I am playing WOT, a single thread game, for 6 years now with various hardware gone through.
The best experience and FPS I had with it, wasn't with the 6700K @ 4.8Ghz, but with the 1700X and the 6800K @ 4Ghz.
Because I do run more than one things on the background. Always TS, and usually a browser streaming radio.
On the 6800K the core 3 the game is running very rarely hits 60% usage and all the other cores at around 10% depending what's streaming.

On the 6700K @ 4.8Ghz it was running on core 2, with 90-100% usage, and all cores were pretty more clogged up, throttling both the 1080 and the FuryX.

While other games that run on multiple cores eg Crysis 3, ESO at Cyrodiil, couldn't run anything on the background with the 6700K.....

Ah, thats where I'm going wrong.
My bad for misunderstanding that someone posting in a UK forum might be regularly visiting korean websites.

I already agreed on that. If you stream games like Crysis 3, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, then 4C8T is likely going to suffer. If this is the majority use case then you should not buy into a quad-core. However, single-threaded games should not suffer from streaming.

We should set up a just giving page.
Call it buy voids silence and get him a 7900x
Would rather just ignore him, he's on a wind up and taking other people threads down with it.

Besides I wouldn't give my hard earned over to Intel for such a shoddy, overpriced space heater. It's bad for my karma :)

Russell from Lincolnshire needs an i5 for visiting Korean versions of twitch, made me LOL.
I'm out of here, you've ruined enough threads

KabyLake X for you as you don't need more than 4c8t ;).

No, 4C8T doesn't have bragging rights in forums like this. 8C16T is required as an admission ticket to participate in forum posting! You either have at least 8C16T or you lag/stutter for multi-threaded games/tasks, because that's the consensus games/tasks to run here!

Would like to hear back from the op so he can give us a more detailed insight into his requirements.

Does it need to an i5 or are you looking for bang for buck within a £200 budget? Does that budget include a motherboard ect? Does it have to an Intel i5? What will you be using it for, what games ect? How long will you be keeping your rig for before you'll likely to upgrade? Is it worth you waiting for coffee lake?

@voidshatter you use Winrar? who still uses Winrar? aside from it being absolute junk its a vehicle for viruses. nothing ever good has come out of anything you dowloaded and need Winrar to open.

Use 7Zip.... like the rest of the world.

Oh and have a little respect for yourself, not every thread needs you peddling Intel at any cost to your integrity.
