Best ISP at the moment?

Hi Guys,

Currently paying £50 a month with TalkTalk, nothing wrong with them, but wondering is there is anything cheaper out there.

I'd like to stay away from BT as there are major ping issues on Valves servers as far as CS:GO is concerned.

I also stream on a daily basis (around 7 hours a day) so upstream is important to me. Currently i'm on Talk Talk's 80/20. By the looks most ISP's offer the same.

But figured it's best to get some ideas straight from the ISP users on here regarding their customer service etc and how anal they are on data usage. Talk Talk have been fine in all these respects, albeit and indian callcentre but you get what you want fairly quickly if you raise your voice :D

If you're paying £50/month you presumably have more than just broadband and phone with them?

If you are just wanting broadband and phone give Plusnet a look.

I was with Plusnet for over a year and they were great. Support was willing to help me with a very intermittent issue I had which resulted in Openreach coming out and replacing the phoneline at no extra cost to me. I never once heard from them about data usage either (4TB+ a month).

The OP was after a cheaper option.

However good Zen may be they certainly aren't cheap.
This pretty much. Zen are essentially the best money-no-object, however that's not going to be worth it for virtually anyone.

Cliché choice but Plusnet are excellent in terms of both the actual service and their customer service (aside from waiting times being a bit longer than desired, though this might have changed) and probably the cheapest out there to boot.

For service/price Plusnet, Sky are worth a shout as well, whoever you switch to make use of a cash back offer via Quidco/TCB, you'll probably find TT offer you a deal to stay so it may be worth a call to them first if you are happy with them.

Zen probably have better servers than plusnet. But really why would you pay double for what plusnet can give you? 99% of problems come down to BT which Zen have no control over other than badgering them if there is a problem. I've never had a problem with plusnet's CS and have always helped with any problems. Unlike TalkTalk that told me to **** off. Nice.

Sorry for the confusion, that £50 also included the Line Rental, the main reason we went for talk talk is we had free calls to other talk talk numbers. Said person we had free calls to is now in a nursing home so no longer needed.

I'll take a look at Plusnet/Sky will also look in to Zen but by the sounds of it, not worth the cost?

Will also see what talk talk offer :)

Virgin used to be a decent shout if you're in a cabled area, but if that happens to be an area popular with students for example then that usually ends up with over subscription. Also offering a 152mbit connection with a 2.25GB cap limit during peak (4pm to 11pm during the week, 11am to 11pm weekends) before they cut your connection speed by 50% and only allow you another 750MB for the next hour or they'll knock you down to 65% is - to me at least - quite restrictive. In theory you can hit the stage 1 and 2 caps in circa 3 minutes.

Plusnet, should be cheaper and I have had no problems with their CS. Their FTTC packages are pretty reliable too. They also offer a 40 down/20 up package if you want to save a bit more cash and don't need that much download speed (about under £20 a month inc line rental last time I checked when my brother moved to them). Router is pretty basic though so perhaps consider buying your own router if it's too basic for you.

Not sure if Virgin is the right choice due to possible congestion problems (best way is to check your area on the Virgin forums), plus the upload speeds are pretty low too, which won't help with streaming if you want to stay cheap.

a 40 down 20 up sounds ideal for what i'm after. Will give it a look... Zen is out of the question, not available in my area. Though having gone on their website it is the same company we used for business leased line in Kent and we moved and saved 70% elsewhere!
