Hi all,

We are moving into our in laws house as they're emigrating.

They currently have Plusnet and doing a speedtest it barely reaches 0.90mbps, a ping of 173 and the exchange is presumably miles away?

I should be hoping to receive 1.5mbps to 3.5mbps.

Who should I go with to get the best service?

I can game on this connection but things go **** up when someone starts browsing or downloading!

Cheers.

Maximum quality all depends on the greatness and satisfactory of the line. Gaming while someone is browsing the internet on a pretty low standard connection is awful. I feel for you there.

If you need to get an estimate (I am unsure whether or not it is accurate) - look around and ask nearby neighbours or use a website such as: http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/streetstats/ (used to be called "Top10.com"). Go there and use their free speedtest/street statistics service.

Get an ADSL nation faceplate, check each phone port has an ADSL filter on it.

And get a good router.. eg.. Billion 7800N or Asus DSL-N55U, these both have stability adjustment, where you can tweak the SNR to get better speeds.

Plusnet are deemed a great ISP.

With PlusNet and in the sticks - can't complain at all / good service when I have called them. Market 1 exchange so no real deals to be had.

There's two but just one is active (the master)

I will try get access to the test socket when I'm there tomorrow. Does the ping rely on the comms to the exchange? Could the exchange be miles and miles away?

Cut the wiring going to the other socket, it might help your speed a little bit or might not.

If you need more than 1 phone handset just use a wireless phone with multiple units.

Pinging bbc.co.uk...it fluctuates between 42ms and 80ms. When someone starts browsing its going up to around 1800ms.

I've just had a look at the master socket...and it isn't your usual one.

This is what it looks like, so no test socket and not a socket that I could attach the adsl nation plate too :(

Edit: I've now unplugged the other line and the ping appears ok now, 24ms. The DL or UL hasn't changed from 0.93/0.24.

Apparently I should be getting between 1.5 and 3.5mb, what do you suggest I try next?

forgiveness the ignorance but how does an adsl nation faceplate help improve the quality of internet line? isn't it just another microfilter that is just inbuilt rather than externally plugged in?

That's a Telewest faceplate, are you sure it's the master? Or has the external cable been spliced onto it at all that you know of?
