I've been asked to find someone a good laptop for £500 tops, it wont be used for gaming so doesn't need a dedicated graphics card, provided the integrated graphics are fine for everything else media related like watching films.

I look forward to some advice as I don't really know enough and I don't have the time to research laptops as she wants to get a new laptop very soon.

i posted in the laptop forum but not many people wander through there.

wow ok no one replying to u ill try to help
its really a personal thing it depends what is important
if she is going to be carrying it around she wont want anything bigger than a 14inch really
and good ones of them generally get expensive

really if she just wants to watch films and stuff, email, chat, id get her an ipad, the screens on them are amazing and its well within budget

thanks for the replies, an ipad wouldn't be suitable as she needs to do uni coursework on it and will be using ms office a lot.

Im considering getting a laptop with an i3 or i5 with 4gb ram no dedicated graphics and then installing a 128gb crucial m4 to make it nippy.

I'm just struggeling in chosing a good quality laptop that isn't going to fall apart. A lot of people complain that the lenovo g570 for £379 with i5 processor has a dodgy hinge that isn't covered in the warranty.

She wants something thats at least 15"

ah oke!
i personally think they are built better than asus or hp
tho none of them have a big warranty so i guess easy to get unlucky

ive used a b570 and really i thought it was built ok, its not fancy looking for sure but i like the matt finish all over, tho the screen is glossy, i like the keyboard too

i think the main difference between the B and the G570 is the G has esata and maybe better speakers im not sure(rly u need check), and they usually all glossy

and the 580's are out now, has the updated gfx and longer battery life apparently, can get a Z580 for little over 400

ssd is awesome idea if you can afford it,

hope this helps you in ur quest^_^

I recently picked up a Dell XPS15 L502x with 1920 screen and an i5 processor from the Dell Outlet for around £450 all in. Regardless of whether games are being played or not, I think it was a great deal.

Could pick up a cheap Inspiron on the dell outlet. An i5 or i7, 500gb hdd, 525gt card, different resolutions upwards earlier from 278. No need to spend £500 on an ivy bridge laptop when a sandy bridge one will do just as good.
