Hi all,

I'm starting a new job in which I get to choose my own laptop for up to £1700.

I'm not sure what to buy as i've usually just been given a laptop.

So which are the best makes these days??? My requirements:

- Laptop for work so not bright green alienware stuff!
- At least 16GB Memory
- Not used for gaming, used for general office and demos, VMs, etc
- Light and thin as possible (lots of travel)
- Good to amazing battery life for movies on those long flights

Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi Vanilla,

@ Gigabyte we have found that a lot of professional users are choosing our P34G models. Great value, good battery life, excellent screen and great all round performance. Well within budget and stylistically very professional / minimal.

If you require bigger screen, but still in thin profile chassis, consider the P35G, or P35W (same chassis different configuration and GPUs).

And if you really want to push the boat out, and maximise the budget (why not if its someone else's cash!) then have a look at the award winning AORUS X3 plus.

All models are available @ OcUK :-)

Hope that helps and gives you a bit of food for thought.

Any Q's let us know.

Regards

Gigabyte UK NB Team

Configure your own laptop to be honest, there's a lot of sites out there that allow you to do this.

Try to spec a 4940mq, some sort of dedicated graphics to allow better usage with VM's etc and overall usage. Then try to find the one with the best battery life. If you go for something like AORUS X3 plus you will be charging it all the time. You want to have the best processing power you can get.

Also get a 1tb SSD perhaps also.

Wow I didn't even know this kinda thing was an option - I always just thought it was a case of buying a brand laptop. Guess times change.

Edit - also general Q: any opinion on the Lenovo Yoga 3? Only seems to be one thread on hee about it

Google it as I'm not allowed to link direct competitors but I think you'll know them :)

Their laptop configuration is probably one of the best around personally.

new xps 13 (2015) model.
Just came out in the UK today and it is seriously fantastically light and small yet with an amazing display. Only problem is you can only get it with 8GB ram :(

New 3rd Gen Lenovo Carbon X1 if you've got up to £1700 being provided, may as well use up the budget ;)

Although even then it may cost too much to spec up, there's always the trusty T series as well.

and i would only buy an xps laptop. my one from 7 years ago is still going strong - although it could do with an ssd upgrade now

but the infinity display is truly gorgeous - a 13" display in 11" form factor

Battery life is the thing, how long are those flights?

I think if your flying long haul you may be disappointed with most of the listed laptops battery life.

This is one reason why I own a MacBook, I make some very long hops now and then and the battery life is second to none, it's form factor is excellent, screen is amazing and minimal weight.....shame you can't use an apple as this would hands down be the choice I would recommend.

They can be up to 12 hours but quite often they have power sockes on trains and planes now.

Battery life is on the list but not that important. Good grunt, being sleek and light are the most important things!

Seems to be so many to choose from. New sleek HP ones that look a bit macbook air-ish, top end ACERs, etc

Just been having a read about the new Carbon X1, think that's where my cash would be going. But then I do like a good Thinkpad :)

So i'm thinking the new Dell XPS 15 is going to win. It's out on the 6th Feb but the only real change is it will come with a 4K screen.

The need for 16GB Ram is unfotunately causing a lot of of issues, many 13" ultrabooks are 8GB max :(

Still the XPS gets god reviews

Just an update - have ordered the new Dell XPS 15. The 4k model just showed up on their site for order at £50 more than the standard model.

Will give up update is anyone shows interest. Otherwise **** you all I got a 4k screen

:D

Bought the Dell. 1700 odd quid all in.

6 weeks on it's already dead. Mobo gone.

Next day business support...BUT....they don't have the parts in stock..for their flagship laptop...in the middle of London.

Seriously considering an apple now - at least then I can just walk it into a store and say 'fix'.

:/
