Best Laptop Make

TBH that's a bit of a vague question, because there are all those factors you mentioned.

And you'll only get opinions and nothing like facts :p

That said I like Toshiba :D I find them to be good quality builds.

It is a very vague question so I'll offer the equally vague cliche "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". ;)

What do you want the laptop to do? Is portability and a long battery life of prime importance or do you want a desktop replacement? Is price the main factor for you or is the budget relatively unimportant?

I've currently got an old Compaq laptop that I quite like but I don't know enough about more modern laptops other than I've not been overkeen on the new Dells I've used - good prices and specifications but I don't get on with the keyboards or touchpads at all although the build quality is quite good. :)

Okay, so i need a laptop to do light gaming, msn, internet and office. Also music editing and video editing would be great. I also need a good amound of battery life (5hrs ish) and i need a laptop weighing less than 3KG and under £1000

I've always liked the IBM Lenovos, they have great specs, look fantastic and work very well.

That being said the new sonys are looking pretty decent:

VAIO® FZ Series Notebook PC VGN-FZ180E/B

* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7300 (2GHz)
* Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium
* Integrated Blu-Ray Disc™ drive
* DVD+-R Double Layer/DVD+-RW Drive
* 2GB (1 GBx2) & 200GB Serial ATA hard drive
* 15.4" WXGA display2 with XBRITE-ECO™ technology
* NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GT
* 802.11a\b\g\n with BT

Its got the latest santa rosa chipset too which is supposed to be a big improvement, and over here its only $1999(US) which is just about 1000 pounds.

I'd say Dell for support, upgradeability (I say that one because you can upgrade without voiding warranty), and one of the main reasons: customisable.

I haven't got a Dell yet (I plan to buy in the next few months) but from what I've read and seen they're pretty good :)

5 hours battery life for under £1000 is gonna be almost impossible. The only laptops I know of that have that much battery life are the sonys, and they cost over £1000.

My Fujitsu Siemens was bought because it was VERY good value and had high specs, but a few months down the line I'm kind of wishing I spent the money on a lower specced Sony or Apple, because I don't need the performance of the better components and having an aluminium rather than plastic frame and associated better build quality would swing me on my next laptop purchase (I typically get a new computer every two years or so, Laptop then Desktops subsequently).

The FS is still a VERY good laptop though, its just the tactile sensations and build quality don't feel up to Apple/Sony standards.

Acer are good value for money but I've used a few new Lenovos recently and found them to be good value and more robust.

I have a Dell laptop and love it so far.
It's a Dell 9400 and cost just under £1k, but I didn't buy it directly from Dell.

The specs:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2GHz)
2GB DDR2 533MHz RAM
256MB Nvidia Go 7900GS GFX
Hitachi 100GB 7200RPM HDD
BEAUTIFUL 17" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife™
Wifi, Bluetooth, warranty, software, etc, etc.

I don't know about customer service because I have not had any problems so far (touch wood :D ).
