Best LGA775 motherboard still available???

Hi guys,

I could do with some help on the following.

My geforce 8800 ultra died a slow death recently and after some investigation I popped it in the oven for 10 minutes and that revived it. It does however not look like it's gonna last long as I had some glitches again afterwards.

Now here's the thing. I was gonna build a completely new sandybridge rig since my current one is nearly 5 years old. However, I read in the forums sandybridge is relatively new and also that the new geforce kepler cards are coming out somewhere in 2011, hopefully. This made me think I might as well wait on these coming out before building my new rig.

So before my graphics card fails again I am looking to upgrade to an MSI GTX460 cyclone. However I'm currently running an asus striker extreme with Q6600 B3 which doesn't overclock at all. I'm looking to upgrade my motherboard as well so I can overclock and have a bit more performance. The best board according to the forums is the gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P which is not available anywhere.

Could any of you guys point me towards a board that is good and still available? Saw the gigabyte board on here but that's DDR3 and I don't want to change my memory as well.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forums.:)

The gigabyte you mention is a very good board, another worthy of consideration is the as p5q range, particularly the deluxe/p5qe/p5q pro. If youd be willing to go the second hand route theese are excellent overclocking boards that can be had pretty cheap.

Thanks Setter,

Your help is appreciated.

As I mentioned in my post would have gone with the gigabyte board but it's not available anywhere so that put an end to that.

Have been looking at the P5Q pro turbo as well. Just looking for some guidance before I buy the wrong board again ;-) Have been stuck with the striker extreme for 4 years now, don't want to make the same mistake twice.

Don't want to spend too much on it either as I still plan my sandybridge upgrade towards the end of the year :-)

Thanks

One more point to research is whether you would want to buy one of the new AMD Bulldozer CPUs coming out in the summer.

I did own a p5q deluxe a while back, 3.8ghz from both a q9550 and q6600, i can certainly sympathise with you regarding the striker extreme, i used to have a 680i board prior to the p5q, (evga 680i a1). Terrible quad clocking board, 3.0ghz was the max my q6600 would do in it. The p5q was a fantastic board, very well laid out bios overclocking options.

Thanks Vinnie,

Will have to look at that as well I guess.

Was originally planning on an xeon rig with an SR-2 board. Read somewhere however that that is more a server setup and that that would be no use to me for overclocking/gaming alone. That's why I made up my mind on the Sandybridge system. The i7-2600K has been clocked upto 5,4GHz. And it costs a third of the X5650 which only runs at 2,66GHz.

What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks again

Running a P5Q Deluxe at the moment, fantastic board. Still overclocking my Q6600 to 3.4ghz with 16gb ram filling all slots. It's a trooper.

That takes me back to the same old problem, can't find the P5Q deluxe anywhere. Send a message to one company to see if they got the pro turbo. Every good board seems to be unavailable.

Ummmmm... just had a quick search on the well known auction site and they had several available :)

EDIT

I run a P5Q Premium with my Q6700 and it's another fine board if you can get hold of one :)

The P5Q Pro Turbo is a very good board too. One got my old Q9550 to 4.13Ghz stable. Keep checking the bay as you should be able to get one for around £40.

Thanks again guys,

Was under the impression all ebay stuff automatically came up in google search, but apparently it doesn't. The P5Q pro turbo looks good, manufacturer refurbished for 80 pounds. Only thing I'm worried about is it's coming from china so if anything is wrong with it sending it back would be a difficult and costly affair.

I'll keep my eyes open and see what else I come across.

£80 for a refurbished P5Q of any type is a rip off. A couple of months ago a retailer was selling them for £75 brand new!!

A Decent P35 board would do the job as well.

Didn't think it was cheap but to be honest it's 55 for the board and 25 for shipping!

Would prefer a brand new board but I can't seem to find one anywhere, which is the reason I opened this thread in the first place.

As already mentioned the P5Q boards are a good bet for 775, especially if its for a quad to be overclocked. I have a P5Q Pro and it has been running my Q6600 at 3.6ghz for ages, my system is coming up to 3 years old now and I've had no issues.

I've got 2 Asus boards, both the same, P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP @n - one running a Q6600 the other will be getting a QX9770 and full water cooling, i like them, and the feature set, maybe not the most over clockable of boards, but vaule for money is good feature set wise.

Thanks Andy,

Wouldn't think twice about buying a P5Q board, I know they're very good boards. I just haven't got a clue where to get one from. They don't seem to be sold new anymore and the only refurbished ones are expensive and from the other side of the planet!

Opened this thread to see if any of you guys could point me towards a place I can get one?

Thanks again for your advise.

It's just that a forum rule prevents us from mentioning directly a competitors link in a forum post... means suspension for us I'm afraid :(

Right, didn't realise that!

That kinda ruins it then for me as oc only has 2 p45 boarfd of which one is out of stock and the other being a DDR3 board...

Never mind, guess I got enough information to help me along! And otherwise I'll just have to stick with my striker extreme till the end of the year. It works, it just doesn't overclock.

Thanks for explaining!

it's a shame I am also looking for a new 775 board.. (yes I'm being cheap and not wanting to invest £1000 into a new setup just yet)

i'm assuming that you've dropped someone on staff a pm to make sure there isnt any old stock somewhere that isnt listed on the site ?

failing that, fleabay for a second hand unit ? or if your lucky new old stock, but as said, we can't help you by linking directly or indirectly to a competitor that may stock what you need.
