Best lighting conditions for LCD viewing?

Hi all I've been monitoring my lcd tvs colours and have noticed that dark scenes are much better in well lit conditions. If the tv is the only light source for example at night then dark scenes seem a little washed out (rather than pitch black). I've heard people recommend putting a lamp behind the TV does anyone do this and has it made any difference?

Its no problem watching the TV with the room light on but on a night it would be night to have the setup a little more atmospheric!

contrast is improved with no front lighting, so your experience is contrary to the norm. But yes a rear light can improve contrast.
