Hi all, im looking to change distro on my laptop thats had Ubuntu since 7.10, to something that might make my CV stick out abit more.

I currently use Ubuntu on my desktop at home and Redhat at work. is there any other distro or OS out there that would make my CV look good?

cheers

If its purely for CV expansion then I would consider CentOS/Redhat or Debian.

If you go down the Redhat route, they have various certifications you can do, maybe worth considering as they are quite highly regarded.

Really all depends on what jobline your looking at.

im not looking to do any certifications in a linux distro just experience really. but i know what you mean about the redhat certifications.

the role im currently doing is a java developer role. im in the processes of updating my cv and if i had redhat experience on there already, would any other distro on there make it stand out more? i guess thats why im asking. im kinda looking for linux distro that companies use that isnt redhat... if you get what i mean...

Would have to say Debian to be honest, its nice and stable and commonly used on production servers. Good for coding/developing and server management. Aside from Redhat and the Unix distros (assuming you've ruled out Solaris/BSDs) then Debians probably the best you can go for and it will look good on a CV.

Distros such as Ubuntu, although Debian based, is IMO less useful on a CV due to it being targeted more at home use. Thats my 2 cents anyway :)

thanks tntcoder for your view.

i did give solaris a thought, well actually opensolaris but wasnt quiet sure if the community is out there is big enough to help if i run into issues.

i think solaris might make a larger impact in the *nix community some years from now since oracle now "owns" it. so that might be a good reason to give it a go.

anyone else willing to share their view?

Oooo id agree with some debian experence (just as its a well known and trusted distro). Open solaris is also a good option, given the links with sun and good old solaris...

Personally id have a look at getting hold of an older copy of unix (im still looking for my dads old copy of sco unix with the scunkware addons, aka freeware, just to have a play and so on). Probably not the best for support anymore, but if you have some free time unix experence is deffinatally liked (many banks for example still run some unix boxes in credit systems and so on).

Some confident gentoo experence could also never go a miss ;) (just try not to sound like an ass about it...)

Just write Linux experience, or Enterprise Linux experience, maybe put sysadmin before the word experience.

The 1st scan of your CV will be 30 seconds, if that.

you should never include a linux distro name on your CV, you should only say as BigglesPip said Linux experiance/ enterprise linux etc. Then in the interview they can ask your questions or to expand further.
