I have used VLC since the year dot for all my media playback and have never though twice about using anything else, especially for my audio.

I listen to .flac and higher quality MP3's, now is VLC better than anything else or is there something else I can be using which maybe give better quality output?

All players will sound the same unless the decoder is broken (buggy) - either the bitstream is rendered correctly or it isn't, and any audible difference between players is almost certainly down to some user-adjustable setting (perhaps hidden away somewhere less than obvious).

It really comes down to what features you want - I wouldn't be without foobar2000, but I'd be the first to admit that it's not for everybody. :)

yeah done that and just updated drivers and now it sort of works, keeps saying there is an soundcard problem, but I know there isnt.

Quality should be pretty much the same on all modern music players as already stated, just pick the player you like the best or has the features you want.

For me its more about organisation of your library rather than quality of sound as most working players are "good enough". On windows I just use media player, but I spend most of my time using rhythmbox on linux.
