Best messenger?

I've not really bothered with MSN etc.. previously but my flatmate has gone away for a few months and I wanted to keep in touch - she uses MSN a lot but I'm using Ubuntu for my OS at the moment.

I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on the various messaging clients out there?

For MSN i prefer AMSN: http://www.amsn-project.net/

Pidgin is nice design wise, but as far as i know it doesn't have support for offline messages, which sucks imo.
