Best method of recovering files from a laptop.

I've been given an old HP Pavilion 9200 that the motherboard died on, all they've asked in return is that I can get all the photos off of the hard drive... How would I go about doing that without having a new motherboard?

Take the old hdd out put it in an external caddy hook it up to a working pc and pull the files off.

remove HDD, plug into working PC, copy and paste files, profit?
