I havent been keeping up much with hardware recently, so please fire some opinions at me ;)

What would be the best bang for buck options for a good chance of 4ghz + ?
As I need something that will at least outgun my E6600, I guess I am looking at an E8400 minimum ?

I already have 4gb of Corsair TwinX 8500, so I need a mobo that plays nicely with that, I was thinking of one of the Asus P5Q range. But which one and are there any issues with the Corsair memory on those. Or any other recommendations without getting pricey ?

I don't need SLi/Xfire, and would like passive chipset cooling.

Hi
Any of the P45 board would be good, and yeah the P5Q range is well thought of, Id say avoid the entry level one, purely because of the placement of the 24pin ATX connector (middle of board instead of side - where all the rest are positioned) but its still a reasonable board that aside. Yeah you'd be best with an E8 series chip.
However have you thought about AMD? Youre looking at around £225 for the intel setup, and as socket 775 is no more, youre not going to have many upgrade options. Conversely the AM3 socket is new and is more likely to give future upgrades. You could either go for the new AM3 boards and invest in DDR3 RAM, alternatively if youre after keeping the costs down, some of the AM2+ boards use DDR2 and are compatible with the new AM3 chips, this asus M4A78 at £60 is great, paired with either the dual core 550BE at £78, stock speed 3.1GHz and its black edition so has unlocked multiplier for easy clocking (Theyve hit 7GHz in tests - obv not on air like) or maybe the tricore 720BE at £105 or if youd get use out of a quad, the 955BE is £150
If you went this AM2+/dual core route thats only £138, almost a ton less than the intel, and can be clocked easily, has more of an upgrade path and is very good performing too

the best bang for buck componants i would say are the biostar tpower i45, this board was reviewed by custom pc and can get to a fsb of 555mhz and outperformed the p5q deluxe in most of there tests when overclocked and its about £40 cheaper. for cpu id go for the e8200 as its cheaper yet you should still be able to get 4ghz on it.

Running a P5Q-E myself. Very nice board.

Was thinking of getting a biostar board but read that they are not good when it comes to clocking quads - as I'm now running a Q9650 it seemed a bit daft to take the risk.

If you are going to run Dual core then would agree that the biostar is if not the best at least one of the best.

Memory - I'm running 2x2gb Corsair Dominator 8500 and no issues.

I haven't really considered the AMD route for 2 reasons.
Firstly my CPU block/fixings wont need changing if I stick to S755, and I dont know that many AMD cpus will hit 4 ghz ;)
The downside with the E8200 is the low multi, only 8 ... would need an FSB of 500, not sure how achievable that is without a lot of luck ?

ahh dint think about the WC side of things, thats fair enough
but the AMDs will clock past 4GHz easy, they hold the world record for OCing over intel atm

Shows you how out of touch I am :)
Just perusing ... the E7500 doesn't look to shabby, good multi and price, I lose 1mb cache but not sure it will hurt a lot ?
What do they clock like ?

Just gonna look up that biostar board .... gotta say though it doesn't sound as re-assuring as Asus ;)
