As title really. Whats the best modem to use for connecting to my apple network? I've heard even the one apple sell has compatibility problems. I'm on adsl.

Thanks

I have a Thompson Speedtouch 546 v6 connected to an AirPort Extreme via Cat6.

If you're not looking for a wireless modem it's a perfect little modem for ADSL, very solid, and I picked it up for £13 online.

What about if you want wireless? or......does the airport extreme take care of all the security, so that the adsl router that handles the line in does not have to do anything? hence why a cheap modem can do the trick?

What about speed hits? will the modem just pass on whatever speed it receives straight the the airport extreme?

I didn't need wireless because it all connects through the AirPort Extreme, however, you can always have a router with Wi-Fi attached to the AirPort Extreme.. you'd just have to setup dual network SSIDs and connect to the closer one.

My ADSL router handles the line, the AirPort Extreme handles the IP address allocation and Wi-Fi side.. it's very simple

Saying that, I've replaced the Speedtouch with a 2Wire 2700HG modem.. :D

Hi EVH

Any chance you could help me out with some info, or tell me where to look?

I have a Speedtouch 546 doing adsl and LAN. I want to get an Airport Extreme, let it take over the LAN duties and connect the Speedtouch to the AE to provide adsl. Exactly as you have been doing.

Also, I need to use the Airport's VPN facilities, so from an external connection I need to be able to get past the Speedtouch.

I'm really not sure if this is possible or how to set it up, so I'd really appreciate some advice.

Thanks in advance.
